Review: Dar Hamad Restaurant, Gulf Road

Dar Hamad restaurant is located off Baghdad Street and on the Gulf Road in Salmiya. The girls and I met for breakfast today at this stunning restaurant. The interior is really impressive, light, vast and pleasing to the eye. Ample parking plus valet parking available too.

A Kuwaiti restaurant serving typically Kuwaiti dishes. Service was exceptionally good. Breakfast was okay but not great. The foul was too salty, falafel very dense, the liver was more of a liver stew than fried livers and the rest of the breakfast platter was unremarkable (neither in a good or bad way).  However, I was surprised at how full the restaurant was when we left (would be wise to book a table for lunch) and I would return again, just not for breakfast.

The toilets were fabulous and thank you for putting a little table in the cubicle for ladies to place their handbag on when they tinkle.

For froufrou wow factor it's a 10/10, service 10/10 but for the breakfast menu it's a 6/10

Breakfast is served from 9 AM-12 PM

The Cumin Weight Loss Theory

Our yummy cumin-loaded brunch today. Recipe below.

Trying to kick a weight loss plateau? Unhand the celery and head for the spice cabinet: New research shows that cumin powder can help  loss, decrease body fat, and improve unhealthy cholesterol levels naturally
Researchers at Iran's Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences randomly split 88 overweight or obese women into 2 groups. For 3 months, both groups received nutrition counseling and decreased their daily intake of calories by 500. But one group was also eating 3 grams (a little less than 1 teaspoon) of cumin powder daily, swirled into 5 ounces of yogurt (the same amount of yogurt, minus the cumin, was also prescribed to the control group).
At the end of the 3-month trial, members in the cumin group had lost 3 more pounds than those in the non-cumin group for a total of 13 pounds weight loss. More impressively, the cumin group members decreased body fat percentage by 14.64%—almost triple the 4.91% loss posted by the control group—apparently due to the addition of the fat-burning spice.
There were internal benefits, too. The cumin group's levels of harmful blood fats, or triglycerides, dropped by 23 points, while the control group's decreased only by 5. Cumin eaters also knocked an average of nearly 10 points off their "bad" LDL cholesterol reading. The control group shed just half a point in that category.
How did the cumin group get such dramatic changes just from eating a little of the spice? First, cumin is rich in phytosterols, plant chemicals known to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the body. Since this is the first research to show the spice has weight-loss benefits, the study authors also speculate that cumin, like other hot spices, temporarily increases metabolic rate.
LWDLIK - All sounded good to me (anything but the dreaded treadmil) so adapted a baked egg recipe for brunch today and was very, very pleased with the outcome.

Baked eggs with spinach, veg and cumin.
Peel and dice two potatoes and two carrots. Boil them for 8 mins in salted water. Meanwhile dice a large onion. Sieve water from potatoes and carrots and drain. Fry diced onion in 2tbs of olive oil for 5 mins. Add potatoes and carrots to onion and continue to fry for few minutes. Add in 1 cup of frozen spinach (just make sure you thaw it out before with a dousing of hot water and squeeze out excess liquid), 2 tbs of chopped dill, 3/4 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 heaped spoon of powdered cumin and 1 heap tsp of tumeric (a natural anti-inflammatory and miracle spice) mix well keep cooking for a few mins more.
Place mixture in an ovenproof dish make small wells and add in 7 raw eggs. Place in hot pre-heated oven at 375F degrees for 12-15 mins. And that's it. Enjoy.
I was thinking you could use other veg too i.e. pumpkin, tomatoes, courgettes, mushrooms.

Quentin Carnaille
Opening reception: 21/9/2016
Time: 7:00 – 9:00pm
Exhibition dates: 22/9/2016 – 21/10/2016
Location: Contemporary Art Platform / Main Exhibition Space

About the exhibition:
Who are we? What is our past? What does the future hold for us? It was with those questions in mind that in 2010 Quentin Carnaille began his first series of works that was to occupy him until 2015.
Focused on the notion of time, he frees the gears from their mechanical arrangement by giving them a new poetic aesthetics thus inviting Man to emancipation. Both abstract and figurative, his works are intended as a singular creation, in terms of form and scope.
This series, made entirely of pieces of clockwork and magnets, celebrates the idea of time; an unalterable time over which matter transforms itself. The constant presence of magnets gives his work an invisible force and a universal attraction.
Quentin Carnaille talks to us about the relativity of time in the Space age with his "zero-gravity" and abstract sculptures, and the time of Man with his figurative representations.
All his sculptures are marked by a profound desire to produce original pieces and to reinterpret certain iconic works in the History of Art. With this series, he expresses an intimate rhythm, a personal vision and a universal questioning purposefully addressed to the future.
“Time only has meaning with the evolution of matter, which never ceases to change in form and organization. Man is an extraordinary catalyst of that transformation, a true agent of the metamorphosis of matter.”

INDULGENCES: REBORN
Mohammad Al-Hemd
Opening reception: 21/9/2016
Time: 7:00 – 9:00pm
Exhibition dates: 22/9/2016 – 28/9/2016
Location: Contemporary Art Platform / The Art Room

About the exhibition:
History repeats itself in similar cycles no matter how long those cycles are; whether they are days, years, decades, centuries, or even millenniums.  We may not notice these repetitions as they occur because of the changes in time or the new pattern that they may take, yet we only notice them once they become part of history. This installation attempts to relate what is happening now in the Middle East to what was happening in the past. In particular, this installation emphasizes the similarities between the current events in the Middle East and the events in Europe during the dark ages.

During the dark ages, Catholic priests had the ultimate power. They preyed on the trust of the common man, which was hindered by the spread of illiteracy. Priests promised sinners salvation for a levy. In a similar fashion, some groups are misusing the name of religion in the Middle East, where poverty and paucity of the good education are also ubiquitous.

In this installation, the similarity between both periods is underscored. In particular, the video highlights the dark ritual elements in a suicide bombers’ preparation. Furthermore, the insertion of elements from a catholic sacramental service underlines the twisted notion that religion can be used to justify the commitment of cruel actions.

The suicide vests are the contemporary equivalent to the indulgences from the dark ages. Both are utilized by the so-called religious men and marketed as the key to salvation and god’s forgiveness. Moreover, this installation can be seen in two perspectives. First, it explains to non-Muslims that the current violence is the fruit of abusing religion and following a false path and in some ways, it’s a revival of the indulgences. Second, it warns Muslims that they are living in their own dark age and they need an awakening.

Review: Zwarah, Old Souq, Grand Avenues :O)

The menu

Presentation, quality and selection was superb

Had a wonderful authentic Kuwaiti breakfast with the family at this delightfully cute restaurant in the old souq at Grand Avenues. From the adorable school book menus to the fab food and service; everything was faultless. We thoroughly enjoyed the Arabic breakfast including foul, humos, moutabel with pomegranite, omelettes, liver, fried cauliflower, falafel, haloumi, labneh, cheese and zaater saj, endless amounts of Irani bread, istikani tea, chi haleeb, gahwah and dates. Everything was so fresh and delicious. My sisters-in-law are excellent cooks and they were really, really impressed. I'm not such a great cook but I know what I like and I liked everything.

Thank you Zwarah for the excellent food and the great service. We'll be back!

I Love You Mumma x

I watched the new Jungle Book (2016) movie on a flight from Dubai where I had spent some quality fun time with my daughter. The movie took me right back to when I saw it the first time with my mumma. I remember the cinema in Shirley, Southampton. I remember the coat I wore. And the happy memories of my mum and I wiggling down the road afterwards singing the 'Bare Necessities' song.

I was surprised to learn the first Jungle Book movie came out in 1967 which meant I was 5. My mum hasn't been very well lately, it was worrying for a while, but she seems to be feeling a lot better now. I was delighted and surprised that I could recall such vivid warm memories from so very long ago.

This is for you mumma. Thank you for all the love and the lessons.

Make great memories with your kids they really will remember them forever.
