The Year of The Rooster - Happy Chinese New Year - Gong Xi Fa Cai

Gong hei fat choy is the Cantonese way of saying the phrase and in Mandarin Chinese, it’s gong xi fa cai (pronounced gong she fa tsai).
FYI, it’s not a hard and fast rule but Cantonese is generally spoken in Guangdong (formerly known as Canton) and surrounding areas, as well as Hong Kong.
But elsewhere in mainland China and Taiwan, Mandarin Chinese is generally spoken.

LWDLIK - Note to self to go to China next lunar new year as a 15 day party sounds like a lot of fun.

Pause Coffee, Mubarak Al Kabeer Street in the City is Trending Big Time

I know it's trending from all the illegally parked cars blocking the street. Yesterday night was mayhem but intriguing. The place was packed inside and out. An artisanal coffee shop/roastery - so freshly roasted coffee beans and then brewed in various ways. I, obviously, need to up my coffee game. My daughter was dying to visit and see what all the buzz was about. Alas, having circled 3 times and found no legal parking we moved on to our old fav, Pick Yo, a few blocks down.

The place has a clubby feel which seems to be a huge hit with the young and stylish. Glad we didn't find parking as even I know allowing a 13 year old to have a coffee at 8pm on a school night is a no-no. But we will go back and find out what all the fuss is about just when it's not so busy.

Pause Coffee opens from 7am -10pm week days and noon-10pm on Fridays.

Dress code: Frou-frou for the ladies from what I could see.

My Beautiful Mother-in-law

Beautiful inside and out. We know she's nearing 90s but a lady never shares her age or goes without a little lippy. Her memory is still sharp and her love all encompassing. The wisest, loveliest person I've ever had the sincerest utter pleasure of meeting. A supernova of shining stars. Feeling so lucky and blessed to have her in our lives. She seriously rocks!

Ghadah Alkandari - Until Exhibition at CAP

Ghadah Alkandari
Opening reception: 11/01/2017
Time: 7:00 – 9:00pm
Exhibition dates: 10/11/2016 – 22/02/2017

Two years ago I constructed my first origami polyhedron. I was unaware that this one object would be instrumental in shaping many paintings and stories to come. And many, many polyhedra to follow. But such is the pattern that plays itself out in my life as an artist: creations are influenced by both the banal and the important. Life not imitating art but mirroring it.
As I prepared for this exhibition, the mood of my work kept shifting from purpose to purpose. Until love, until peace, until I’m settled in a place I want to be. Always waiting for the big Until.

Ghadah Alkandari is a Kuwaiti artist born in Delhi in 1969. In 1992 she received a BA in Mass Communications from the American University in Cairo. But it was a six-week painting course at the School of Visual Arts that “shaped my current painting style, which was also influenced early on by both classical painters: Cezanne, Matisse, Schiele, Modigliani and Klimt, and comic books: Mad Magazine, Archie and Asterix.”

Her body of work ranges from large-scale acrylic paintings, primarily figurative, exploring the wide spectrum of human emotion and familial complexities, to smaller intimate pen and ink surreal drawings detached and focused on everyday happenings.

The artist had numerous solo exhibitions in Kuwait, and has participated in several group exhibitions locally and internationally, including the Arab Culture in Diaspora exhibition in Kuwait, Femmes Artistes Du Koweit at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (2006), Approaches to Figurative Practices at the Third Line Gallery, Dubai (2007), and JAMM Contemporary Art Auction in Kuwait (2010).

Since 2009, Ghadah Alkandari uses her blog prettygreenbullet as a platform to display her work on a daily basis.
