I went to a kiddies Halloween party the other day dressed as a witch, as was my daughter. Fortunately, the hostess was also dressed up in a costume :O) But the other British women had not dressed up and some had kids who were not in costume?? Anyway, that isn't issue that I want to address.
Even though I was sat in full witch's costume, one would think a perfect conversation starter. Not one person spoke to me, smiled or commented. I found this intriguing. I had heard these mummies were all very clicky and aloof. However, personally, watching them and listening to them interact with the hostess' husband I realised they were socially inept. And they stick together because they are unsure of themselves. Which looks as if they are clicky and aloof. Yes, major moment in my witch's costume.
On two different occassions this week I have come across two Brits who were extremely polished and full of social graces. They came over introduced themselves, made polite chit-chat and moved on; leaving a firm, good impression of themselves and their names unforgotten.
The other day whilst standing for hours, ruining good shoes, waiting for a prince - I also realised that I, too, could polish up those skills. As could most who were stood in the garden. I knew many people there and yet I did not approach them to say 'Hi' and a few did not go out of their way, either, to come over and say hello. Why? I can only imagine it was very much like my observation at the Halloween party. Only this time I was participating.
Note to self: Really, really make the effort go over and say a quick hello! Even if your feet are killing you and you are afraid to lose your balance as heels dig into in the soil.
And to the embassy - refreshments would have been nice.
