Donatella Versace presented her highly anticipated collection for H&M to a full house that included many of fashion’s most valuable players (the photographers Bruce Weber and Patrick Demarchelier; the makeup artist Pat McGrath; the designers Christopher Kane and Alexander Wang; the model Coco Rochas) and a handful of best-dressed celebrities (Blake Lively, Sofia Coppola, Jessica Alba) at the “Versace for H&M Hall on the Hudson,” a converted pier on Manhattan’s West Side Highway. The collection, studded with gold medallions and covered in loud, tropical prints, gave a respectful nod to Versace’s 1980s self while simultaneously clocking a lot of what’s trending now, namely dynamic prints, minibags, head scarves, chokers and flouro pastels. The men’s clothes were equally colorful — a hot pink suit was the standout — and made the best use of the collection’s signature menacing-preppy alligator print. After the show, guests were ushered into a glittering disco ball hall and treated to performances by Nicki Minaj and Prince (Prince!), who sang odes to the Italian fashion house and its signora before finishing the set with an epic “Purple Rain” singalong.
The Very Best of Versace for H&M will be available in select stores on Nov. 19.
