UNESCO adopted in 1995 a Spanish initiative to celebrate the International Day
of the Book on each 23rd April, as it is a very symbolic date for culture, literature
and book lovers: on such a date in the year 1616, Miguel de Cervantes and
William Shakespeare passed away.

Spain is celebrating the Day of the Book after long time: the booksellers from
Barcelona started this celebration at the beginning of the XXth century as 23rd
April is a special day in the Catalan city: it is also the day of Sant Jordi (Saint
George) the saint patron of Barcelona, Catalonia and Aragon. Everyone buys
and offers books and roses in Spain on the Day of the Book.
