Kuwaitis Demonstrate to Demand Expulsion of Syrian Ambassador

Kuwaitis demonstrate to demand the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador.

Hundreds of Kuwaitis Friday staged two demonstrations in solidarity with the Syrian people, demanding the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador and the recalling of Kuwait’s envoy from Damascus.

Holding Syrian flags and carrying anti-Syrian regime banners, more than 300 people marched on the Syrian embassy in Meshref, 20 kilometers (13 miles) south of Kuwait City, demanding the expulsion of the ambassador amid tight security.

More than 1,000 others meanwhile gathered outside the parliament building in Kuwait City where speakers called on the Kuwaiti government to suspend ties with the regime of President Bashar Al Assad.

Only Kuwaiti citizens were allowed to attend the two protests as police prevented hundreds of Syrians and other Arabs from taking part. The demonstrations were held despite scorching summer heat in this desert Arab state.

“The presence of the Syrian ambassador here and the presence of the Kuwaiti envoy in Damascus is a flagrant offence against the Kuwaiti people,” opposition lawmaker Mussallam Al Barrak told the gathering in Kuwait City.

Arab parliament head and Kuwaiti MP Ali Al Deqbasi called on Arab and Muslim countries to expel Syrian ambassadors in protest against the bloody crackdown on Syrian protesters that has reportedly killed more than 2,000.

The Kuwaiti protesters announced they will march again on the Syrian embassy next Tuesday.

A Kuwait foreign ministry official on Friday urged a halt in Syria’s deadly crackdown on pro-democracy protesters and called for dialogue and “true reforms” to end the crisis.

“The state of Kuwait expresses its extreme pain for the continued bloodshed among the brotherly Syrian people,” said a statement by the official cited by state news agency KUNA.

“Kuwait calls for dialogue and a political solution to allow implementing true reforms that meet the legitimate demands of the Syrian people away from the security actions,” said the unnamed official.

LWDLIK- Glad the Kuwaitis demonstrated, but why couldn't the foreigners too?
