Q8 Raft Competition & Spring Fling Sports Carnival 2012

to be hosted at Marina Crescent Beach organized in frame of the 3-day
1st Spring Fling Sports Carnival under the patronage of National Committee
for Drug Prevention and in co-operation with Activemedia. The Spring Fling
Sports Carnival will take place between April 26 – 28; the Q8 Raft Competition
will be held on Friday, 27th April (heats will start at 9.00 AM).

This year the Marina Crescent beach will give home to a fantastic 3-day
series of events in frame of the 1st SPRING FLING SPORTS CARNIVAL.

Beside the Raft Competition the Spring Fling Sports Carnival will feature
beach football, beach volleyball and tug of war tournaments alongside
with the traditional carnival activities.
The Carnival is organized under the patronage of the National Committee for
Drug Prevention and is aimed to inspire the young generation of Kuwait to
conduct a healthy life stile and fight against the spreading use of drugs.
The Organizers expect vast participation of all segments of the Kuwaiti
society – locals and expatriates alike – of all age groups to enjoy the
outdoor activities (either by direct participation in the sports and fun events
or as spectators cheering their selected teams).
All sports activities offer the possibility of participation to any enthusiastic,
sports-loving and health / fitness conscious resident of Kuwait.
Concept
The concept of offering the possibility of participation to students,
teachers, company colleagues, association members, expat communities
etc. at this open event ensuring fair competition received a good response
from the Kuwaiti sport loving society, thus we will continue to offer all
participating teams free practice sessions on the splendid beach of the
Marina Crescent bay.
All teams will compete on uniform, heavy duty, inflatable rafts
(carrying capacity up to 10 persons) and participants will have the
chance to practice and race on rafts specially constructed for
rowing even on rough seas. Trainings will start from 1st of April and
will continue till the day of the Competition.

There will be a maximum of 5 rowing lanes separated by individual
buoys and floating markers; each lane will have its own turn-around buoy.

To make the Competition even more spectacular the rowing lanes will be
allocated parallel to the beach shore stretching from the start / finish
point designated at the Marina Waves entrance quay to the turn-around
buoys fixed at the beach of Marina Crescent.

Competing teams will paddle from the Marina Waves to the buoys
anchored at Marina Crescent beach circling them by passing the buoys
on the starboard side and paddle back to the start/finish line (a total
distance of about 850 meters).

Above setup will add spice to the competition as the spectators will
be able to follow the race from a close distance lining up along the
beach strip and will give an extra dose of adrenalin to the rowers
since they will be able to hear the cheering crowd during the entire race.

Teams wishing to participate are invited to register by completing
the Registration Form (containing the name of the team, name of
team members, name and contact of the Captain)
available on-line at www.q8raftcompetition.com and at
www.springflingcarnival.com forwarding the Form to one of the
following e-mail addresses: q8raftcompetition@gmail.com or
info@q8raftcompetition.com and at info@activemedia.com.kw
Captains will be contacted by the organizers for discussion of training
schedules and collection of team member photos for the purpose of
distribution of Team Badges allowing access to the training rafts and the
training area from 1st of April till the date of the Race.

Participation
Since the Rafts are light weight (approximately 90 kilograms) the
minimum number of team members is 6 and maximum is fixed in 10
team mates.
There will be three categories; women, men and mixed (in mixed
crew teams number of men and women should be equal).
Depending on the number of teams participating in each category
there will be heats (in case there are more than 5 teams in a particular
category). The first and second teams of each individual heat will
qualify for the Final. Should there be a large number of teams in
any category the organizing committee will decide on the
necessity and rules of semi-final heats amening to reduce the
number of the teams to the Final.
Competitors must be above 14 years of age in any category.
No special skills are required; the rafts can be powered by
muscle force only using uniform paddles provided with the rafts.
Crew members should remain the same between the heat and the
final. Only one substitute per team is allowed in any category.

Team members must wear the ID cards distributed.
Rafts must pass the buoys marking the course of the lane on the
starboard side (right) of the raft. Passing onto another team’s
lane or passing around the wrong side of the buoy will result in
disqualification.

Team members are advised to wear a life jacket in case any
member is not a competent swimmer.
The organizers will deploy the necessary, reasonable safety

measures (the entire Marina Crescent bay will be sealed off
by a chain of floating barricade preventing entry of jet skies etc.),
however, the organizing committee cannot be held responsible for
any injury, damage or loss incurred by any participants. All competitors
taking part at the event do so at their own risk.

Captain’s meeting

any inquiries / questions are welcome
(please e-mail to: q8raftcompetition@gmail.com or info@q8raftcompetition.com ).
