Before the discovery of oil in Kuwait, dhow builders were viewed as one of the major national resources. Kuwait owned over 800 dhows prior to World War I. By 1919, Kuwait had acquired about 1200 dhows of different types & sizes. They were used for fishing, pearling, deep-sea trade, Gulf coastal trade, & the local transportation of goods & fresh water.
