Kuwaiti authorities arrested the co-founder of Al-Aan online newspaper and former Information Minister Saad Bin Tefla Al-Ajmi over an article criticising the use of state funds, his lawyer said.
Al-Ajmi's solicitor, Al-Humaidi Al-Subaie, said that his client was detained at Kuwait International Airport on Saturday as he was travelling to Saudi Arabia with his family.
He said his client was unaware of the court ruling.
A Kuwaiti court ordered Al-Ajmi to one week in prison over an article published two years ago at his newspaper.
The lawyer said that Finance Minister Anas Al-Saleh filed the lawsuit when he was minister of trade and industry.
Al-Subaie pointed out that the court passed similar sentences on writer Zayed Al-Zaid, co- owner of Al-Aan newspaper.
Al-Zaid took full responsibility for writing the article, Al-Subaie said.
