Desert Biking in Kuwait

Muttla Ridge

Jahra Bird Reserve

Desert Biking Club Of Kuwait

What is it? An informal, mixed group who all enjoy recreational bicycling – whenever possible away from the traffic and the town. The rides are not ‘guided tours’ but we do try to find points of interest along the way. And we never get lost! What do we do? We meet most Friday mornings and cycle as a group in many different areas of Kuwait. Rides are approximately 25 kms long and they often include off-road stretches. The group is very diverse but we proceed at the pace of the slowest rider.

In the main season, we like to use desert tracks. The Muttlah Ridge and the surroundings of Ahmadi are two of our favourite areas. We also ride on Failaka Island, in the Zour & Kiran areas, Jahra Bird Sanctuary and the ruined Earth Satellite Station. In Ramadan, we enjoy evening Iftar rides in Kuwait City. Some parts of the suburbs are surprisingly pleasant. We have occasional social functions, such as BBQs, theatre visits, music concerts, etc.

Who can join us? Anyone from teenage upward is welcome to give it a try. There is no application form or membership fee. ‘Members’ are simply those who ride together regularly. What do I need to join? Mainly enthusiasm, some cycling experience and a bike. If you want to give it a try, you can rent a club bike for KD 1 but it is essential that you have a bike of your own. Almost any bike with fat tyres will do. We strongly recommend wearing a well-fitting helmet, colorful clothing and a water bottle; some basic bike tools and a spare tube will be useful. A degree of fitness helps but if you start riding early in the season that can develop gradually. We are not power bikers but absolute beginners would not enjoy these rides. Is it safe? Of course you bike at your own risk but the only injuries we’ve had so far have been minor cuts and bruises. Where is the next ride? We use email to inform members of the ride’s timing and the meeting point and any other useful information. We put our bikes onto bike racks and drive out to the meeting points located anywhere in Kuwait. Getting to the start point is basically your own responsibility (but the regular riders can sometimes help new riders needing transport).
