Queen Elizabeth II Hazes Crown Prince Abdullah
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is many things: corgi owner, eager participant in Olympic stunts, the UK's longest-reigning monarch.
And as this story from a former British ambassador to Saudi Arabia makes clear, she is also a stone-cold badass.
THE QUEEN SPENT AN AFTERNOON USING HER MILITARY-GRADE DRIVING SKILLS TO HAZE THE CROWN PRINCE OF SAUDI ARABIA
Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles was given a private audience with the queen when he was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia in 2003. At the time, Abdullah was technically still the crown prince, though he'd been de facto ruler for several years. During their meeting, the queen gleefully recounted the story of Abdullah's first visit to Balmoral, her castle in Scotland. It all started innocently enough, with an offer to tour the estate:
After lunch, the Queen had asked her royal guest whether he would like a tour of the estate. Prompted by his foreign minister the urbane Prince Saud, an initially hesitant Abdullah had agreed. The royal Land Rovers were drawn up in front of the castle. As instructed, the Crown Prince climbed into the front seat of the front Land Rover, his interpreter in the seat behind.
But then, a surprising twist! The queen herself was Abdullah's driver:
To his surprise, the Queen climbed into the driving seat, turned the ignition and drove off. Women are not — yet — allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia, and Abdullah was not used to being driven by a woman, let alone a queen.
And she wasn't just driving, she was DRIVING, leaving Abdullah a quivering wreck:
His nervousness only increased as the Queen, an Army driver in wartime, accelerated the Land Rover along the narrow Scottish estate roads, talking all the time. Through his interpreter, the Crown Prince implored the Queen to slow down and concentrate on the road ahead.
That's right: Queen Elizabeth basically spent an afternoon using her military-grade driving skills to haze the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.
In addition to raising Corgis, the queen is no stranger to driving, going back to World War II:

THERE is now proof of life after death — although it’s not what you would think
Spanish company, Bios Urn, has developed a fully biodegradable urn that allows people to grow a tree from the ashes of a loved one’s mortal remains.
The company hope the urn will offer users a natural and sustainable alternative for remembering those who have passed away.
On their website, the company claim their product has been designed for success with the top capsule of the urn being purposely built to facilitate the growth of the seed.
“Before burying the urn you have to mix the components with some soil from where you want to plant the urn. The components allow a proper seed germination,” they wrote.
“Thanks to Bios Urn structure, the seed germinates in the top capsule, separated from the ashes. Once the urn starts to biodegrade seed roots are already strong enough to contact the ashes. With biodegradation the entire set becomes part of the subsoil.”
Available for both people and pets, the product offers customers the ability to pick six different varieties of seeds including pine, ginkgo, maple, oak, ash and beech.
The urns can also be purchased years ahead of their use as the materials stay active as long as they remain in a relatively cool environment.
While the idea may not be for everyone, if you are looking for environmentally friendly burial option that personifies the cycle of the life, the Bios Urn could be for you.

Starbucks Ordered Via App, Paid and Waiting For You
The company said it has started testing mobile orders, which means customers place orders, pay by app, and all those venti-green-tea-frap-extra-matcha-no-whipped-cream drinks are hot and ready upon arrival. Portland residents get to try it out by year end, with a nationwide rollout planned for sometime in 2015.
LWDLIK - Very cool idea or hot, depending on what you order.

Letter to George Clooney From An Arab Guy
Dear George,
Congratulations. Mabrook. You’re marrying Amal Alamuddin, an international award-winning barrister (for us Americans, “barrister” means lawyer, but I wrote “barrister” because it just sounds so much cooler). And on top of that, she is one of us. You hit the jackpot.
CNN has called her “discreet.” It looks like you found the only Arab woman who wouldn’t blab to the whole world that she is dating George Clooney. Lucky you.
I do have some words of advice for you, from one Arab guy to another soon-to-be Arab guy. Yes, you are not currently an Arab, but you will become one soon enough. See, when one of our women marries a white guy, she doesn’t become whiter. He becomes more like us. Wikipedia says your “ancestry includes Irish, German, English, and more distant Scottish and Dutch roots.” And you were born in Kentucky. As far as I can tell, that means you’re “really white.” Strap yourself in for the ride.
I have been known to get a little upset when Arab girls marry non-Arabs. But most of the time, they turn those non-Arab guys into Arabs. And when that happens, I’m all for it. Our culture is strong. It is contagious. And though you are George Clooney, you will not be immune to this phenomenon.
Oh, and by the way, there are tens of thousands of Arabs named “George.” My dad is one of them. And it’s not Arabized or anything. It’s just “George.” We just say the “g” a little differently, like it sounds in “beige.” So we will be able to say your name just fine. And you won’t be the first couple to be named “George & Amal” either. So you’ll fit right in.
Ok, so let’s talk about a few things.
Get ready to go to Lebanon and explore. We Arabs are extra proud of where we come from. And Lebanese Arabs are extra special super-duper over-the-top proud of where they come from. Lebanon is a beautiful country and you will have a great time. But movies come to the Middle East a little late, so don’t be surprised if some Arabs tell you, “Hey, I loved you in Ocean’s Eleven.” They might not even know about Ocean’s Twelve or Ocean’s Thirteen yet. Try not to ruin it for them. Also, while parts of Beirut are more beautiful than any other place in the world, don’t be alarmed if most of it looks like it was bombed yesterday. This is normal in our part of the world.
Also, you are marrying an international lawyer who has represented kings and advised secretary-generals. We Arabs are political animals, and I imagine Amal is no exception. You will be learning much about the ins and outs of Arab history and politics over the last century. If you haven’t yet, you will probably be receiving some lectures on Palestine. Sit back and listen. You will learn a lot. And it will all be true. You’ve been in Hollywood for a long time, so much of it may come as a shock at first. This is normal. But you’re not just marrying any Arab girl. You’re marrying the Arab girl who is an expert in international law. And there’s nothing we Arabs love more than talking about international law and how it has been betraying us since… well, since forever. And there might be some anger directed at America. But remember, we don’t hate Americans. We just hate America.
Oh, and we have to talk about the wedding. You may have hoped for a small, tactful affair. I wouldn’t be too optimistic. Arab parents like to brag when their daughter marries someone really accomplished like a doctor, a lawyer, or an owner of three or more gas stations. But this Arab daughter is marrying freakin’ George Clooney! She’s marrying Up in the Air! She’s marrying Gravity! She’s marrying Batman! (Yes, I know Batman wasn’t your proudest moment, but you know what I mean.)
At the wedding, the size of your family will immediately grow a hundred times over. You will become a cousin to more individuals than you ever dreamt was possible. You will hold hands with men and dance in circles. You will need to learn the “change the light bulb” and “windshield wiper” moves. I have a video that might help.
Our weddings can create a sort of sensory overload. I would go to a few to observe the spectacle firsthand before your big day. It could be quite traumatic if the first Arab wedding you attend is your own. Yours might make “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” look like a private ceremony.
Incidentally, now that you will have an Arab wife who advocates for Arab rights, if you were ever going to run for political office in America, you definitely cannot now. Unless, of course, you move to Dearborn, Michigan, where you will be swiftly elected mayor with 99.9% of the vote, Saddam-style.
Finally, George, you have inspired me. If you can snag an accomplished, intelligent, beautiful, worldly, multilingual Arab genius professional, then maybe I can too.
So, welcome to the family. You’re going to have more fun than you ever imagined.
Sincerely,
Amer
LWDLIK - So loved this. I think I'm an Arab too.

Mother Puts up Daughter's One Direction Tickets for Auction on Ebay as a Punishment
Any good parent knows that to make a punishment stick, you’ve got to get creative. Getting grounded is nothing compared to customized consequences. Just ask the Australian girl whose mother put her One Direction tickets up for auction on eBay.
It’s not just one ticket, either, but four — apparently purchased for the daughter’s birthday so that she and a few friends could see the massively popular boy band live in concert. Alas, it was not to be, as a pattern of misbehavior among this clique of young ladies forced mom to play her trump card, shaming the kids in the process.
The screed was posted along with the tickets — the current bid is a whopping $760 AU ($716) and sure to climb still higher — is really too good to summarize. It’s a bit unhinged and brutally frank, with a merciless sense of ultimate judgment, and borders on a declaration of revenge.
THIS AUCTION IS FOR ALL 4 ONE DIRECTION TICKETS IN SYDNEY OCTOBER 25th. You can thank my daughters self righteous and lippy attitude for their sale. See sweety? And you thought I was bluffing. I hope the scowl on your bitchy little friends faces when you tell them that your dad and i revoked the gift we were giving you all reminds you that your PARENTS are the ones that deserve love and respect more than anyone. And your silly little pack mentality of taking your parents for fools is one sadly mistaken. Anyhow. Your loss someone else's gain who deserves them! THE TICKETS ARE SEATED IN ROW O section 57. REMEMBER AUCTION IS FOR ALL 4 TICKETS and will be sent registered postThink she was angry when she wrote that?
...OH YOUR FRIENDS THOUGHT THAT A FEW PRANKS CALLS WOULD PUT ME OFF SELLING THE GIFT WE BOUGHT FOR THEM for YOUR BIRTHDAY because YOU all LIED to us about sleep overs so you could hang like little trollops at an older guys HOUSE????? Pffft!! I find it HIGHLY amusing that you girls think you invented this stuff. Tricks like this on OUR parents is how HALF of you were conceived .....And why a lot of your friends DONT have an address to send that Fathers day card to!!! I'm not your friend. I'm your MOTHER. And I am here to give you the boundaries that YOU NEED to become a functional responsible adult. You may hate me now..... But I don't care. Its my job to raise a responsible adult not nurture bad habits in my teen age child

How Do You Get Your Kids to School on Time?
A few handy tips :OD
By anonymous...
“I admit it, I’ve sprayed her down with Febreeze.” - My Fav.
“My kids take showers at night sometimes and then sleep in the clothes they want to wear the next day! T-shirt knit is a beautiful thing.” - Ummmm?
“I let the boys pick their clothes—and don't fret whether they match. As long as they are weather appropriate and the boys are content to dress themselves, that’s a success.” - Which is why there are so many Spidermen out there.
“I’ll be honest: bribing!” - My expensive fav.
“Tell them it’s 7 a.m. . . .when it’s really 6. (My dad used to do that to us too).” - Used and abused and no longer effective :O(
“Breakfast in the car, shoes on in the car, and hair combed/brushed in the car!!!” - Yep, this works for me.
“Roll up a pancake with butter and margarine in the middle. Hold it in place with a toothpick. Breakfast to go!” - Breakfast in the car followed by a gum saves a good 15 mins.
“I would buy dinner rolls and two or three kinds of lunch meat and make sandwiches, wrap them individually, and sort into labeled zipper freezer bags so the kids could just grab whatever they wanted and it was thawed by lunch time.” - Done this with pancakes, scones and waffles will be trying the turkey sandwiches soon.
“I am not proud of this, but if they have forgotten to brush their teeth, I will give them gum to chew on the way to school.” - :oO
“My boys have curly hair; the eldest, REALLY curly hair. If we were pressed for time, instead of stopping to try to comb it, we’d just ‘fluff” it and it looked fine. :->” - That answers a lot.
“I use weekly clothing sorters (the kind you hang from the closet rod), even with uniforms. I always hear ‘I can’t find. . .’ With the sorters, separated by day, they always have everything they need to get dressed and out the door...” - Far too organized for me.
“No one has to make their beds or pick up their clothes until AFTER school… I’d rather they eat.”
“When doing laundry, I fold outfits together, and put them in gallon-sized Ziploc bags. My daughters (2 and 6) can quickly pick what they are going to wear, but I know they will be appropriate and match since I put them together.” - This I will be trying.
Good luck mummies, almost back to school time :OD

Were You a Child in Kuwait During the Gulf War? The BBC World Service Would Like to Hear From You Today
An email from BBC World Service -
Hello
My name is Shaimaa Khalil . I work for the BBC World Service on a programme called World Have Your Say. It’s a conversation programme discussing news stories with contributors from around the world. Today our topic is – being a child in a conflict zone.
This is inspired by the Save The Children report about Syria’s children. We wanted to get a group of people together who have experienced being in a conflict zone as children to speak to one another.
Kuwait was one of the places we thought of and I was wondering if you knew anyone who could take part in our programme.
I read your blog about memories of the Gulf War and thought it was great!
We go on air today at 0500 PM GMT. So it would be great of you can put us in contacts with Kuwaities that have lived through this and can speak to us.
TO find out more about our programme and our topic today please go to our facebook page ..
Also please CC my colleagues Karnie and Rabiya cc’es on this email as they too are working on today’s programme.
Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon
Shaimaa

LWDLIK - Good luck Shaimaa. I hope some Kuwaitis will contact you to recount their stories. I remember how important the BBC World Service was to us during the Gulf War; it was our only link to the outside world. I hope the Kuwaitis have stories that can reassure, help and encourage those poor children who may be listening in Syria and any other war zones. God help them all.

Starbucks Insider - Drinks for Kids
BY PAULA KASHTAN
Full disclosure: I spent over a year of my life working at Starbucks. During that time, I witnessed toddlers downing highly caffeinated caramel Frappuccinos and kids crying because the pretty passion iced tea is supposedly "only for adults." So what should have been a well-deserved coffee break for Mom turned into yet another stress-fest. If only those moms knew what I did—that are plenty of drinks on and off the menu that are OK for kids.
Kids' Hot Chocolate
The old standby comes kid-sized (8 ounces) and kid-temperature (130 degrees). The littlest ones might like it even cooler—100 degrees is lukewarm. It comes with 2 percent milk, but nonfat, whole and soy are also available. Whip cream is optional ... but yummy!
Passion Iced Tea
This fruity, decaffeinated drink is totally kid-friendly. It's hibiscus flavored, which is a fancy way of saying red and berryish. The barista will ask if you want it sweetened. This means adding three pumps (assuming you're getting a tall, which is the smallest iced size—12 ounces) of a simple sugar syrup. Adding raspberry syrup or lemonade also tastes good. Green tea and black iced tea—your other options—have caffeine, so aren't good for kids.
Vanilla Steamer
Also available in kid's size and temperature and with a variety of milks, a vanilla steamer is simply steamed milk with vanilla syrup. You will see sugar-free vanilla on the menu, but know it's made with sucralose—the sweetener used in Splenda.
Smoothie
Little known fact: Starbucks has smoothies ... and they're good! Flavors are orange mango, strawberry and chocolate. All the smoothies come with a banana (though you can't really taste it), 2 percent milk, and whey protein and fiber (is derived from cow's milk). Strawberry and orange mango smoothies are also made with fruit purees, while chocolate smoothies contain mocha syrup. Since they come in one size only—grande (medium), which is 16 ounces—you might want to share.
Babyccino
This is simply extra-foamy milk—like a cappuccino, but without the espresso. (Cappuccinos are about half foam and half steamed milk, while lattes have about 1/4 foam and 3/4 milk.) Little kids especially love the light, bubbly nature of foam. Ask for it bone-dry if you want the drink to be all foam.
Blended Strawberry Lemonade
You won't see this drink on the menu, but it's a winner. It's made of strawberry puree, lemonade, cream base (the syrup used to make Frappuccinos blend better) and optional sweetener. The result: A sweet, slushy treat that kids love. You can also get just plain lemonade at Starbucks—it's a little sour on its own, so you might want to have sweetener added.
Caramel apple spice
This is apple juice with cinnamon dolce syrup, heated up with caramel and whipped cream on top. If your child likes a more classic apple cider case, just ask for heated apple juice. You can also simply get the apple juice cold, in a cup—even though there are probably apple juice boxes in in the front display case, some kids find it more fun to get a bar drink of their own.
Raspberry Italian Soda
This drink isn't on the menu, but kids will love it. Grab a Pellegrino from the front display case, then ask the barista to add raspberry syrup (about four pumps) and—if you want—sweetener. The bright, bubbly, fruity drink is fun one.
Syrup Crème Frappuccino
Many Frappuccinos (the blended, milkshakey drinks) have caffeine, but a few are OK for kids. Strawberries & Crème, Vanilla Bean and Double Chocolaty Chip are all made without coffee and with a caffeine-free base (the syrup that helps the drink blend). You can also get a syrup crème Frappuccino, which is made with milk, a caffeine-free base, ice and whatever kind of syrup you'd like. If your kid wants a caramel Frappuccino, this is the way to go.
Skip - Chai Lattes (ton of caffeine) and skip most Frappuccinos except the above.
LWDLIK - I found this very handy as my precious gets fed up with ordering the same every trip to Starbucks. Even if you don't have any kids you may find yourself babysitting one day and God forbid you should give them a high sugar, caffeine drink on your watch LOL.
