Fire Spreading From Play Area of Mall in Qatari Capital Kills 19, Including 13 Children

Reuters
Nineteen people, including 13 children, died Monday in a fire that raged through an upscale shopping mall in Doha, Qatar’s Interior Ministry said.

The fire centered around a children’s play area in the Villaggio Mall, a collection of shops and indoor canals.

The fire started late in the morning and centered on a children’s play area in the Villaggio Mall, a glittering collection of shops and indoor canals in Doha, the capital, frequented by expatriates in the oil-rich emirate. The ministry did not immediately provide the nationalities of those killed. Local news reports said no Qatari children were among the dead, and Reuters said four of the children who died in the fire were from Spain. French media reported that one French child died in the fire.

Thick smoke could be seen pouring from the building as emergency workers moved to contain the blaze. Photos posted online showed people who appeared to be injured, rescue workers clambering across a smoke-shrouded roof and a man in shirt sleeves holding a young child whose fate was not certain.

The fire at the mall, known for pricey shops, gondoliers and an indoor ice rink, raised troubling questions about the safety of even the most opulent buildings in the booming city, where shopping centers both provide air-conditioned respite from the desert heat and serve as de facto town squares for expatriates and wealthy Qataris. The deadly blaze prompted authorities to announce the creation of a committee to monitor building safety standards.

Al Jazeera, the Doha-based satellite broadcaster, carried reports of the fire, but for hours there was little mention on state-run Qatar TV, according to residents. Frantic messages appeared on social media sites throughout the day, with some reposting messages pleading for information on children at the mall’s Gympanzee play area.

The Interior Ministry offered little information until an evening news conference, while misinformation swirled online. “All are requested not spread rumours as it will create panic among people,” the ministry said in a statement hours before the news conference. “Be responsible persons and cooperate with security departments.”

The cause of the fire, which also injured 17 people, was still under investigation, the ministry said in the evening. Many of the injured were identified as members of the civil defense team responding to the fire. Four teachers and two firefighters were among the dead, the ministry said.

“There don’t seem to have been any fire alarms or sprinklers at the mall,” a relative of a 2-year-old killed in the fire told Reuters.

Qatar, a Connecticut-size sprout of land jutting into the Persian Gulf with a native population of 225,000, is home to more than 1.5 million expatriates mostly from Europe, Asia and the United States.

Another Great Post by My New Eco Warrior Friend Abdullah

Real Madrid vs. Kuwait

image
Although I’m not a soccer fan I went to the game with a bunch of friends. It was great and all, they had a nice show, fireworks and everything. But that’s not what I want to focus on, I stayed around after the game and I got really upset with what happened so I took some photos and I’ll leave you to judge.

We need more concerned Kuwaitis to make a noise about this. Print the pics off and speak to your MPs, councillors, or send them to your local newspapers.

It's Not Just Bad for Your Marriage: Cheating on Your Partner 'Can Also Give you a Heart Attack'

    I
Risk: ¿sudden coital death¿ is much more common when a man was meeting his mistress than with his wife
Risk: 'Sudden coital death' is much more common when a man was meeting his mistress than with his wife
Daily Mail - It is news likely to bring an ironic smile to the lips of many a scorned spouse – adultery is bad for the heart. A wealth of studies show that men who cheat on their wives risk not only their marriage but also their cardiac health. Liaisons away from home and with younger women are particularly dangerous.

The warnings come from Italian researchers who reviewed previous studies on the causes of infidelity and its effects.
These showed ‘sudden coital death’ to be much more common when a man was meeting his mistress than when he was with his wife.
The researchers could not be sure why but put forward a variety of reasons, including a guilty conscience.
The review’s authors, from the University of Florence, began by scouring medical literature for research papers including the words ‘unfaithfulness’, ‘extramarital affairs’, ‘infidelity’ and ‘men’.
This provided information about the type of man who is unfaithful and the potential consequences.
The analysis showed that heart attacks, including fatal ones, were relatively rare when a man was having sex with his wife at home. But when he started to play away, the dangers grew.
German studies show that most men who died during sex were having an affair and meeting away from the family home.
Furred-up arteries were blamed for more than a third of the deaths – the physical demands of sex are said to cause the fatty plaque that has built up inside arteries to rupture.
p

Heart attacks were the next biggest cause of death, the Journal of Sexual Medicine reports.
The stress of wining, dining and satisfying a woman who is likely to be younger than the man’s wife may also be to blame, as can the strain of keeping an affair secret.
Researcher Dr Alessandra Fisher said: ‘Extra-marital sex may be hazardous and stressful because the lover is often younger than the primary partner and probably sex occurs more often following excessive drinking and/or eating.
‘It is possible that a secret sexual encounter in an unfamiliar setting may significantly increase blood pressure and heart rate, leading to increased oxygen demand.’
Guilt may also play a role with  some research suggesting heart problems are more common among cheats who  are still attracted to their wife. ‘Betraying this partner could punish him,’ said  Dr Fisher.
The overview also suggests that in any one year, 4 per cent of married men have an affair. Over the course of a man’s life, there is a 50-50 chance of him straying.

LWDLIK - Only 4% ???  Thank you dear F for sending me this and although we both agree that it's good news definitely better news would be if their testicles exploded.

A Concerned Citizen's Plea to Those Who Say They Love Kuwait

Old Ships Docks

I'm pretty sure you’ve all passed by the old ships docks right before the big mosque on gulf street, it’s right in front of this building (picture below)
image
The ships look great and remind you of the past and how people used to live and everything.
image
I only have one question though, have you seen them from the other side?
imageimageimageimageimageimageimage
This one of the many valuable places in Kuwait, it’s a treasure reminding us of our past. What happened? Seriously?
imageimage
You know what’s the worst part? I was not able to breath while taking these photos. And there so much more that I wasn’t able to cover.
I really hope people think twice before throwing anything in the sea or on the roads.

Kuwait Still Suspended From London 2012 Olympics 8 Kuwaiti Athletes to Compete Independently Under Olympic Flag

The suspension came back in Jan 2010 due to alleged government interference and has not been resolved [link]. The 8 qualifying Kuwaiti athletes for London 2012 will compete under the Olympic flag [link]. How sad is that :O(

LWDLIK - Seriously? So does this mean they will not carry the Kuwaiti flag. Because that's what it sounds like. No, no, no people this is unacceptable. Why has this not been resolved? The words despair and incredibly mucked up come to mind. .

How Super Kewl is This? Hyatt Al-Fahad and Kanye West in a Movie Together

On the red carpet in Cannes. Kanye West and Hayat Al-Fahad (Queen of the Gulf Silver Screen) at Cannes film festival premiering Kanye’s new movie Cruel Summer.
Starring Kid Cudi as a car thief who falls in love with a blind Arabian princess, the clip is the project he was reportedly working on in the Middle East in February. The film's cast also includes Razane Jammal, Pusha T, Big Sean, Palestinian actor Ali Suliman, Aziz Ansari, Hayat Al-Fahad and West himself.

LWDLIK - The Kuwaiti actress Hayat Al-Fahad is pictured above in black, getting a hug from Kanye. Such a lovely lady we had a chat once in Debenhams whilst  waiting to pay for our goods - sorry can't remember what she was buying (LOL) - but she was ever so sweet. She's one of my husband's favourites and I told her so, I think she blushed.

I Really Don't Get Why Someone Would Say This? Another Rant...

Thought I'd put this question out there and see what sort of response it gets...
What would you say to a woman who told you this. A friend of mine overheard a conversation about foreigners (British beauty salon staff) having to go for health checks every year. So the British hairdresser was moaning about it to a Kuwaiti female client who responded with a curt and  incredibly naive, " Well, you Westerners go out partying all the time here so you need to have health checks to stop Kuwaitis getting infected with anything!"
The very sweet hairdresser didn't have an answer for her but I do...
Someone needs to get real, baby! Please see how many precious local male angels fill the Bangkok flight daily. And no one's checking these guys who come home to their sweet unsuspecting wives. Ignorance is deadly! And you are downright RUDE!

Kubbar Island Beach Clean-up Drive

Kuwait is a country with a beautiful coastline and a magnificent skyline. Due to the pollution caused primarily by the invasion, and the industrial movement that has taken over, the beaches and air aren't as they used to be. With the efforts of those living here and those who believe in the beauty and potential that encompasses Kuwait, all that is changing gradually.

On his regular cruise to the Kubbar Islands, Sheikh Mishal noticed that the beach is in a very bad state due to the litter & trash left over by the visitors and needed to be cleaned up. Teaming up and taking the initiative he organized this event to mark the "EARTH DAY", they used bags to collect all the refuse dumped along the sand. Soon enough, everyone around at the beach at that time started joining in.

This video shows the exact condition of the beach before the clean-up began and how it looked after this campaign. More and more people in Kuwait are showing initiative in keeping Kuwait clean, safe, and beautiful for the future generations. This was an experience worth sharing and we encourage "one & all" to keep & maintain the heritage of Kuwait beaches.

LWDLIK - Well done people :O)
