KUWAIT CITY, Dec 3:
The nature of domestic violence in Kuwait is very cruel, up to the extent of plucking fingernails, burning legs with cigarettes, or severe beating, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting Deputy Head of the Family Connectedness Project in the Social Development Bureau Dr Wafa’a Al-Arady.
Al-Arady told the daily that the only study carried out in the country on domestic violence was in 2007 with the participation of 600 women, who were randomly selected. Results of the study showed that 585 of these women - 97.5 per cent - were subjected to various forms of violence.
Besides domestic violence, families in Kuwait also suffer due to infidelity between husbands and wives wherein the cheated side justifies the act by accusing the spouse - the wife in particular - of having extramarital affairs through Twitter and other social networking or dating sites. Domestic violence in the country is increasing at an alarming rate, Al-Arady added.
Meanwhile, Education Professor at the College of Basic Education Dr Lateefa Al-Kandari has attributed the escalation of tension in the Kuwaiti society to the poor output of the educational process, reports Al-Shahed daily.
Al-Kandari asked about the value of democracy and dialogue if the entire nation is in total disarray. She holds the lawmakers responsible for the deteriorating situation because they dragged the youths into the struggles between the opposition and the government, in addition to provoking them to storm the Parliament building. She said patriotism is useless if the people do not behave accordingly and help the country achieved its development goals. She also stressed the need to treat expatriate teachers fairly by granting them salary increment equal to their Kuwaiti counterparts.
