Kuwaiti breeders clinched the top spots in sheep beauty contests held Tuesday as part of the ongoing Popular Heritage Festival. Facing a crowd estimated at 4,000 in Al-Roudhatain, 140 sheep competed, and the ‘Nuaimi’ Arabian sheep breed, owned by Badr Al-Jeean took home the grand prize - a brand new car.
This competition is a traditionally held exclusively for male sheep in which the evaluation criteria is decided on the livestock’s physical shape and productivity. Breeder Meshal Al-Adwani won the KD 3,000 second place prize, while Khalid Al-Messiyeb won the KD 2,000 third place prize. The KD 1,000 fourth place and KD 500 fifth place prizes were won by Khamees Al-Dousary and Nasser Al-Aradah.
Meanwhile, camel beauty contests continued to be held on Tuesday with a competition held for the ‘Al-Shaal’ camel breed, in the 30-camel herd category. “The contest featured fierce competition from breeders from Kuwait and other Gulf states,” Sheikh Sabah Fahad Al-Nasser Al-Sabah, said judging committee leader. He added that at least six Kuwaiti contestants have good chances in garnering victory.
The Popular Heritage Festival is an annual event featuring traditional sports and activities from the Gulf region. It features beauty contests for camel, sheep and falcons across different locations in Al-Roudhatain. Equestrian competitions and Arabian horse beauty contests at the Hunting and Equestrian Club were held, in addition to fishing competitions organized by the Fishermen’s Dewaniyas in Al-Fintas, Al-Salmiya and Al-Wuttiya. All events are covered by Kuwait TV and the local press. The festival concludes on March 24, 2012.
LWDLIK - Ok.. please don't ask for more details because this is all I've got, and no desire to find out more or go see a sheep or camel beauty pageant. A little too bizarre for me.
